Kalamkari Embroidered Clutch
These raw silk clutches with hand-painted ‘Kalamkari’ border provide a striking hit of colour that is sure to enhance any outfit. The hand-painted border is an intricate demonstration of the craftsmanship that still resides in parts of our world today.
This clutch is made by artisans in South India. ‘Kalamkari’ is a complex labour intensive and time consuming art form that involves hand-painting on textiles. In ‘Kalamkari’ art, burnt tamarind twigs are used to sketch, sharpened mango or bamboo twigs are used as pens or ‘kalams’ (Hindi word for pen) for drawing the fine outlines, and eco-friendly vegetable dyes are used as colours. These vibrant natural dyes are extracted from bark, flower, and the roots of various plants and trees.
With the initiative of an organization that is working towards the development and empowerment of the rural artisans, especially women, these artisans are able to revive their traditional art of ‘Kalamkari’ and have an economically sustainable life.
